Dreadnaught

On the occasion of my 500th beer, I remarked that I had a wish list of beer and that the Fifty Fifty Elijah Craig 2009 Eclipse I used to celebrate the occasion was just one of those that remained on my list. Since then, I’ve also checked off Citra by Kern River Brewing and acquired a bottle of Black Tuesday and Cigar City’s Hunahpu (I’ll sit on these for a while – but I have them YEA!!).

What’s left?

3 Floyds – Dark Lord
Surly – Darkness
3 Floyds – Zombie Dust
Lawson’s – Double Sunshine
Hill Farmstead – Abner
Goose Island – King Henry
Alpine – Exponential Hoppiness
3 Floyds – Dreadnaught

Another mid-west swap netted me two fresh bottles of Dreadnaught and two bottles of Arctic Panzer Wolf from Three Floyds. Now, we can check Dreadnaught off the list as well. I’m excited about this imperial IPA. If you recall a post from my last Three Floyds’ entry (Alpha King) I recounted my initial quest to find Beer Advocate’s top beers. I was surprised to learn that you could just waltz into a good beer store down the street and get a beer like Dreadnaught. Wow, have I learned a lot in the last four years.

A purported 99 IBU to go along with a 9.5% alcohol by volume. Dreadnaught pours a rich orange honey color. First impression is that this is a mellow IPA but it opens up quickly to reveal some very nice complexity. Has the malt base similar to Alpha King and the same herbal hop qualities. It deviates in that it has some mild tropical flavors – juicy. Layers in some citrus rind and a growing and pleasant bitterness. Dreadnaught is a really a smooth drinking imperial IPA – I really like Dreadnaught and give it 95 points.
