Tasting: July 25, 2014
Style: Imperial IPA
Beer #: 570
My family tolerates my craft beer hobby with amazing patience. While I’m passionate about it – I don’t really need any reminders that it’s just a hobby and there are more important things that need my attention. While I would have been happy stopping at the Carton Brewery on the way home from the shore so I could get some fresh 077XX last Friday – it would have conflicted with my kids’ ability to ride the rides in Point Pleasant. My attitude – oh well – next time. I made the better choice.
I think I was rewarded when a quick stop on the way out of town that night netted my latest infatuation – 077XX. Not only did I find it – the clerk told me that it had just arrived. Since canning day is on Friday – the four packs I clutched in my arms had only been in the can for a couple of hours. Even though we got home at about 11:00 PM – I had to crack one open.
077XX has been garnering an awful lot of attention – probably because of this on-line article from First We Feast.
I’m tickled pink to have a desirable beer in my home state. 077XX comes in a tall sixteen ounce can with a label similar to their sessionable beer – Boat. Quick stats 7.8% ABV with an IBU of 80. It also list an SRM (Standard Reference Method) of 5 – light yellow. That matches up as I pour this 077XX into my oversized cognac snifter. As it flows it emits a very fragrant hop. Definitely hits me right up front with crisp orange rind, grapefruit and pine. I can’t say that I pick up any appreciable malt base maybe some tropical fruit candy – but again not enough to balance out the hop bitterness or to push it over the top for me. Don’t get me wrong, this is a very enjoyable imperial IPA. Kudos to the folks at Carton – 91 points. Keep the hits coming.
