Boulevard Brewing

Boulevard Brewing is a relatively new line of beers on New Jersey shelves. A quick seekabrew.com check and it appears that this Kansas City, Missouri brewer now sells their product in twenty-five states. Of note, they produce a series of beers in what they call their “smokestack” series as well as a “smokestack limited” series.

Boulevard Brewing 2015 release calendar

Mid-Coast IPA
Tasting: February 19, 2015
Beer #: 702
ABV: 5.6%

This Mid-Coast IPA was part of a mixed variety pack and was part of Boulevard Brewing Company’s “Tasting Room” collection. I guess they weren’t moving as part of a set, so it was a single bottle buy at my local shop. The label describes the Tasting Room series as beers that would have been test sampled at the brewery for feedback on a potentially broader release. Consumers can write the brewery on their experience by visiting Boulevard Brewing Website

This IPA reports an IBU of 104 and gets out of the gate with a pop of sweetness, then it’s overrun by black pepper and extremely tart grapefruit. That bitterness builds sip after sip until I find myself dreading the clunky bitterness on the finish. My feedback – very pedestrian – 83 points.

Double Wide IPA
Tasting: February 19, 2015
Beer #: 703
ABV: 8.5%

Big caramel up front. I can’t put my finger on it but tucked in the background is a weird medicinal taste and is a tab bit fizzy. Although these shortcomings hold Double Wide IPA from being a “go to” IPA in a sea of better choices. It does has a full rich flavor and I’ll call it a not bad 86 points.

Oatmeal Stout
Tasting: February 25, 2015
Beer #: 704
ABV: 5.1%

Another “Tasting Room” beer. Chalky chocolate and creamy texture. Better than I thought 86 points.
