Tasting: November 21, 2010
I know I call the addition of spice to ales “gimmicky†– but Anchor has been doing it for 35 years, so it’s hard to criticize. I’m also a little biased as this ale has become a tradition with me – as I’m sure I’ve had it every year for the last 10 – 12 years. I’d call it a “porter-style†ale. It pours dark brown with a tan head that lingers beautifully. Definitely a cornucopia of nose here…nutmeg, chocolate malt. Taste – definitely picking up roasted malts, nuttiness, dark chocolate and finishes with light hoppiness and a hint of what I’ll call a mulling spice.
I give it an 88.
