Ass Kisser Double IPA

When you boil it down to the basics, people buy things to solve problems and/or to feel better. Think about everything you buy — I bet it fits into these two categories. Most of the “feel better” purchases have a fleeting effect – a disposable joy that we crave to recreate over and over again. We will even knowingly throw money away for the feel better purchase. Think of a lottery ticket. It provides us with the millionaire fantasy for a few moments even though we all know deep inside that the odds are completely against us.

Beer isn’t a problem solving purchase — at least for me. Like food for some – enjoying a good beer or wine for me is a great experience. This beer however, fits the lottery ticket example. I simply bought this beer because it made me laugh when I saw it on the shelf in Delaware a couple of weeks ago. Since it was a novelty buy, I don’t have any expectations and I have a back-up beer ready to rescue my palate in case of disaster.

Short and sweet after the first few sips, I’ll call it “‘eh”. It has some candied flavor up front – but it’s underwhelming and soon overpowered by the hops. There isn’t that harmonious transition or balance here. With each additional sip, all I get is a quick repeat of the bitter lingering finish, nothing else. It wouldn’t be so bad if the taste on my palate was good – but it isn’t. It’s just peppery and bitter. A double IPA can be so much more. For the humor factor I’ll give it an A – but for the beer, I’ll give it a pedestrian 75.
