Tasting: November 5, 2011
The freak October snowstorm caused widespread power outages and ultimately caused the “postponement” of Halloween celebrations in a number of towns across northern New Jersey — Kinnelon included. I completely understand that there were safety issues and some families had bigger concerns than putting on costumes and/or supplying candy. To me, it was the right decision to have everyone celebrate when the town returned to some normalcy. I do have one complaint. On Sunday night, the night before Halloween, our council president (not our Mayor) sent an e-mail telling us that our cooperation was “expected”. Really — Herr Bergermeister — were there plans to taser anyone caught wearing a costume? Well yesterday was the re-scheduled Halloween. I had the day off work and had a great time watching Darth Vader and a scary skeleton marching in their school parade. We followed with some neighborhood trick or treating. Thumbs up to our neighbors and friends for supplying some fun and a wagon full of adult beverages.
Another end to a crazy holiday. Time to relax with a nice stout. This one is from California’s Bear Republic Brewery. It’s an imperial stout with an ABV of 8.1%. Pours isn’t completely black — but a cola brown. It has very little head. Aroma is of dark chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is a little thin and fizzy, but some of that dark chocolate shines though but big on the expresso. Some alcohol burn comes through on the finish. It’s okay – but watery and small flavors leave me far from being impressed. I’m going to give it 83 points.
