Tasting: March 18, 2013
Beer #: 447
Reminds me an awful lot like Cricket Hill’s bourbon-barrel aged stout. Very solid barrel influence, but not a very impressive base stout. I usually expect the base stout flavors like chocolate and coffee to be out front — and the barrel influence of vanilla and oak to add to the complexity in a complimentary role. The flavors are juxtaposed in this one. This one tastes like the barrel had a nice amount of bourbon left at the bottom. Overall, it is a bit watery — which is surprising for a 10% ABV beer with an original gravity of 23 degrees plato (over 17 is considered dense with fermentable sugar). They also claim an IBU of 70, I don’t get that level of bitterness. Alcohol only presents a mild burn. I’m sure there are those that like the bourbon forward influence — and like a lot of things in life – it’s a matter of preference. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t turn one down if someone offered me one. I’ll put this one at 86 points.
