Style: Session IPA
Beer #: 550
In a case of the grass always seems to be greener on the other side – I’m jealous of states that have breweries that make “must have” beer. Yes, states like Vermont, California and Michigan are off the charts and have multiple entries in this “must have” category – but even Connecticut has Fuzzy Baby Ducks; Florida has Jai Alai; Ohio has JuJu and even Oklahoma has Bomb. Meanwhile back in New Jersey – well, it seem we have a bevy of okay breweries that make okay beer — but certainly none that people outside of our boundaries clamor to have.
A Beer Advocate thread asked members for their state’s best IPA – while many in New Jersey nominated Kane Overhead IPA many there were quite a few votes for Carton’s 07xxx.
Recently, a trader did ask me about a New Jersey beer – Boat beer also by Carton Brewing of Atlantic Highlands. Since it’s a “sessionable” ale (low ABV) and its from New Jersey, I haven’t paid much attention to the bright orange “tall boy” cans at Gary’s in Wayne. On further review, it seems that we may have something in this beer (Beer Advocate 91 points) and potentially with Carton Brewing. Boat beer isn’t readily available at retail outlets in New Jersey as they distribute the beer themselves.
Boat beer is crisp and hoppy but like most of these new sessionable beers lacks a bit of depth and backbone. But in fairness, Boat beer may be the best sessionable beer that I’ve had to date. It keeps that crispness and doesn’t spiral into awful bitterness half way through the can. Very nice – 87 points for Boat beer. I looking forward to great things from this homegrown brewer.
