Grunion by Ballast Point
Style: Pale Ale
Beer #: 837
ABV: 5.5%

What a pleasant surprise. Grunion was entirely drinkable with bright citrus and melon notes and some really nice sweetness that brings it all together. I think that Grunion would be a good beer to share with craft beer newbies as it is smooth and doesn’t have a biting bitterness. I also think it’ll play well with the biggest craft beer snobs – I’m proof. Have to remember this one for next summer as it Grunion gets an easy 92 points.

Hop Pun by Carton
Style: Pale Ale
Beer #: 838
ABV:5.2%

Admittedly, I’ve popped open a few of these cans before sitting down to write this review. I should have known something was up when a friend gave me twelve cans when I asked him for four. Clunky muddled bitterness. Not a fan 84 points.

Holy Crap by Mispillion
Style: Imperial Red Ale
Beer #: 839
ABV:9.0%

This Delaware-based brewery is new to the Garden State and this big ABV imperial red ale was a great introduction. Has the signature caramel, toffee and dank hop flavors one would expect in a red ale. Alcohol does intrude a little bit but overall I like it – 88 points.

Junior IPA by Radiant Pig
Style: Pale Ale
Beer #: 840
ABV: 5.0%

Interesting beer that I got as a bonus beer in a recent trade. Not sure of the hop used but it reminds of Mosaic. Black tea, herbal, pepper, caramel with lemon undertone. As it warms it strikes me as somewhat dank and a lot of tropical complexity in the background. Junior IPA has a bit too much carbonation for my liking but is a crisp drink. Solid beer 87 points.

Overpass by Coney Island
Style: IPA
Beer #: 841
ABV: 6.5%

Not much to say about this IPA – muddled flavors, nothing bright, dank, crisp or distinctive. Maybe some caramel sweetness. very mundane – 84 points.

Pumpkin Down by Ballast Point
Style: Pumpkin Scottish Ale
Beer #: 842
ABV: 5.8%

I’m not a fan of pumpkin beer and I’m not a fan of Pumpkin Down. Typical pumpkin spices – cinnamon, glove and ginger. Was a gift so, I don’t feel bad dumping this one down the drain. 75 points.

Sweet Baby Jesus by DuClaw
Style: Porter
Beer #: 843
ABV: 6.5%

For obvious reasons, this beer was the buzz last Christmas with the non-beer geek community. My wife got this bottle as part of her grab bag gift. I’ve had other peanut butter beers, most notably,
Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Stout – 88 Points. Terribly thin but definitely nutty. More hazelnut than peanut. Too much carbonation. Meh… 82 points.

Floridian by Funky Buddha
Style: Hefeweizen
Beer #: 844
ABV: 5.6%

Came as a bonus beer in a trade that centered around me receiving a Last Snow from Funky Buddha. Delivers the typical banana, clove and some lemon zest. Not much to rave about. Very ordinary to sub-par. 83 points.

Wake Up Dead Nitro by Left Hand
Style: Milk Stout
Beer #: 845
ABV: 10.2%

The nitro makes it smooth and creamy. They don’t use a widget in the bottle (ala Guinness nitro cans). I assume it’s infused with nitrogen as it’s being bottled. Nice roasted flavors and aroma. Compliments milk chocolate and dark chocolate with coffee undertone. Really very nice – 91 points.

Cubano-Style Espresso by Cigar City
Style: Brown Ale
Beer #: 846
ABV: 5.5%

Mellow coffee and chocolate in a thin body. A tad fizzy. Entirely drinkable, not entirely interesting – 86 points.

Stowaway IPA by Baxter Brewing
Style: IPA
Beer #: 847
ABV: 6.9%

Baxter’s offerings are new to New Jersey’s shelves. This was a gift from a friend – Cheers J. Really exceeded my expectations. Nice caramel and syrupy sweetness offset by some earthy hops of pepper, black tea. I don’t get the citrus they describe but all in all, I enjoyed Stowaway – 88 points.

Venus, The Bringer of Peace by Bell’s

Venus The Bringer of Peace by Bell's Brewing Company

© 2015 popsonhops

Tasting: April 14, 2015
Style: Ale
Beer #: 730
ABV: 7.5%

Venus, The Bringer of Peace by Bell’s

After having the first beer in Bell’s planetary series – Mars – I said that I wouldn’t check back in on the series until they released Saturn. However, I received this bottle of Venus, The Bringer of Peace as a bonus so, why not. As a refresher, Bell’s Brewery seven-part beer series is inspired by British composer Gustav Holst’s century-old orchestral suite also collectively known as “The Planets”. As was the order of Holst’s suite – here is the order of Bell’s release:

“Mars, The Bringer of War” – Double IPA
“Venus, The Bringer of Peace” – A Blonde Ale brewed with honey, apricot, vanilla and cardamom
“Mercury, The Winged Messenger” – A Belgian Single
“Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity” – A malt forward Brown Ale
“Saturn, The Bringer of Old Age” – A Bourbon Barrel-aged Barleywine
“Uranus, The Magician” – Black Double IPA
“Neptune, The Mystic” – A beer inspired by Dr. Bell’s Medicinal Stout, one of Larry Bell’s homebrews that also helped inspire Eccentric Ale

As you can see from above, Venus the Bringer of Peace sports a list of complex ingredients. Out of the gate it brings piercing sauvignon grapes, cardamom and clove. Not a favorite – 78 points.

Here are my thoughts on Mars, The Bringer of War

Even more odds and ends…featuring Larry by Wachusset

Larry Imperial IPA by Wachusett Brewing

© 2015 popsonhops

Tasting: March 14, 2015
Style: IPA
Beer # 714
ABV: 8.5%

Larry by Wachusset Brewing

Picked up Larry by Wachusset as a one-off at Cable Beverages. I’ve seen it included a number of trades and loved the name. Has an IBU of 85 (strong bitterness) and an ABV of 8.5%. Larry has a juicy sweet citrus on the first few sips. Bitterness is a little clunky a bit of orange rind. Finishes meekly but all in all Larry hits me as 88 points.

Black Hole Coffee Stout by Mikkeller

Tasting: March 14, 2015
Style: Stout
Beer # 715
ABV: 13.1%

Mikkeller Black Hole

Very fizzy right out the gate. So much so, it impedes on the initial flavor. Body is light and the flavor is lightly layered in coffee, raisin and a bit of chocolate. Mediocre at best 76 points.

Gumball Head by Three Floyds Brewing

Tasting: March 15, 2015
Style: Wheat Ale
Beer # 716
ABV: 5.6%

Gumball Head

Another piece from the haul brought back by a friend visiting Indiana. Couldn’t figure out the cartoon cat with the cosmonaut uniform smoking the stogie on the label. A quick Google search yields that the cat is part of the world of cartoonist, Rob Syers. Definitely an edgy character.

As far as the beer is concerned. It’s sweet like a pilsner. A bit fizzy, flattened bitterness and a mild citrus flavor. It’s entirely drinkable but it’s more of a one and done – 87 points.

Tasting: March 15, 2015
Style: Scottish Ale
Beer # 717
ABV: 9.75%

A kick of booze over a sweet roasted caramel syrupy base. A little grape must, raisins and peat as well. I enjoyed – 88 points.

Silver by Boulevard & Odell

Silver A 25th anniversary collaboration beer by Odell Brewing and Boulevard Brewing

© 2015 popsonhops

Tasting: March 10, 2015
Style: Ale
Beer #: 712
ABV: 7.3%

Silver by Boulevard & Odell

I admit that I get sucked in by a fancy label every now and again. For the most part, labels convey certain snippets of information to me – like if the ABV is high, I might expect some viscosity and some booziness. IBU would tell me a beer’s bitterness and things like barrel-aged or dry-hopped are tell me about some potentially added complexity.

In the case of Silver by Boulevard & Odell, the label and cork and cage presentation certainly did catch my attention. The label design features what appears to be two separate labels seamed vertically down the middle. It led me to wonder why two notable brewers would release an anniversary collaboration beer. Did one help the other? Well, the reverse of the label shares a wonderful explanation and with full credit to the brewers I’ll relay it:

On November 17th, 1989, John McDonald loaded a keg of Boulevard Pale Ale into the back of his pickup and drove to a restaurant a few blocks down the street. Scarcely twenty-four hours later and six-hundred fifty miles away, Doug Odell loaded a keg of Odell Golden Ale into the back of his pick up truck and…you get the idea. They were the first kegs of beer either of them ever sold, but they wouldn’t be the last. This golden copper ale celebrates twenty-five years of brewing with an ample body of caramel-toffee malt balanced with piney hop notes.

I get the caramel-toffee notes but I have to say I get none of the piney hops. In fairness, this bottle of Silver by Boulevard & Odell has a bottling date of July of 2015. Has an odd yeasty flavor. a bit medicinal. Terrific brewers, just not a fan of Silver by Odell & Boulevard – 78 points.
