Tasting: July 3, 2014
Style: Imperial Pale Lager
Beer # 555
At one time, I would have called Otter Creek one of those “first generational” craft brewers that had stagnated; failed to innovate and showed no desire to keep up with the next waves of craft brewers. Then a few months ago, a cartoon of a couple of hippies in a VW bus on a six-pack holder caught my eye — but what stopped me in my tracks was that it was a collaboration between Otter Creek and Sean Lawson of Lawson’s Finest Liquid fame (a Vermont Legend). That beer – Double Dose really blew me away (95 points) and their “Brewmaster Mike” series earned them some new found respect from yours truly.
Citra Mantra is part of the aforementioned “Brewmaster Mike” series and it’s described as an Imperial Pils Lager. It reports itself as having moderate bitterness of 55 International Bittering Units (IBU) and an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 5.75%. Citra Mantra is unfiltered and made with Citra hops and “100% good vibrations”.
The palest straw yellow – flavor is crisp of grass and herbs with a mellow sweetness. Bitterness is sharp and somewhat funky. Pilsner is a nice crisp and mildly sweet lager – adding Citra hops is a really nice addition and Citra Mantra is a really nice summer beer. I like it enough to put it at 87 points.
