07747 (Galaxy)

07747 by Carton Brewing Company, Atlantic Highlands, NJ

(C) 2016 popsonhops

07747 (Galaxy). Massive tangerine, herbal as in some underlying black pepper and black tea. Some ever so mellow dankness and peach but you have to let it sit on the palate for a few moments to get that at all. But who does that? Sip, swallow and it’s nothing but tangerine and a wave of bitterness. Seems like 07747 comes up as one-dimensional as the original 077XX. Maybe still I’m nitpicking because I still give 07747 a respectable 91 points for it’s hop experience.

Sumatra Mountain

Sumatra Mountain Brown Ale by Founders Brewing, Michigan

(C) 2016 popsonhops

Speaking of Carton, they release coffee-based ale called Regular Coffee – 82 points. It’s a watery coffee that’s sugary sweet like the name suggests. Sumatra Mountain isn’t your typical coffee stout or coffee IPA because it’s neither. It’s a brown ale with coffee. The coffee is bright and delicious. It bursts on the palate right out of the gate. Mostly in a sugary sweet wave that rolls in and recedes on the finish. If you are a fan of coffee IPA or stout – I highly recommend Sumatra Mountain – 93 points.

Avery Vanilla Bean Stout

Vanilla Bean Stout, a bourbon-barrel aged stout by Avery Brewing Company, Colorado

(C) 2016 popsonhops

At first, I didn’t really like this stout. Probably because it came across as thin and a tad boozy with artificial flavors. As a result, I plugged the bottle and left it in the fridge. On the second day, I decided to finish the bottle and it wasn’t so offensive. Mostly a french vanilla flavor up front and to a lesser extent, some tootsie roll chocolate. There is little barrel influence (assuming that the vanilla was from the beans). Still, a bit on the thin to medium side. Due to the boozy quality, it detracts my opinion. In conclusion, I’d say the second day pushed it to 88 points.

Perrin Black Goat

Black Goat Double Black Lager Aged in Bourbon Barrels by Perrin Brewing Company, Comstock Park, Michigan

(C) 2016 popsonhops

An interesting brew to say the least because you don’t see many barrel-aged black lagers. Rather sweet and it is the predominant characteristic of this dark beer. I can see how that would put off people but I kind of like that. In addition, to the sweetness some minor roasted grain flavor falls a little short in trying to balance the sweetness. However, I did enjoy. Therefore, Black Goat chews its way to 88 points.

Other Half IPA

Other Half IPA by Other Half Brewing Company, Brooklyn, NY

(C) 2016 popsonhops

Really thought I had this before…maybe I did and didn’t enter it into my collection. Maybe I’ll find it as a duplicate entry someday. This time around, not impressed. Clunky bitterness, cracker-ish grains. 86 points.
