How new is Three Beards Beer Company? Well, they haven’t accumulated any frequently asked questions as of yet on their website. From what I can gather, the company’s story is not the typical script of a home brewer that dreamed of opening a brewery. Rather it seems that their mission is to help home brewers by taking their recipes to a mass produced level via a local brewery. My assumption is that Paper City Brewing, which is also located in Holyoke, MA, is that host brewery. Considering this was on a store shelf in New Jersey – they’ve delivered on their mission. They list two labels thus far – Cow Puncher IPA from Jason Simmons and John “Lem” Lemming and Lumberjack Black Lager from Virgil Reed. Simple label with a cool name. Reminds me of something I read some time ago about a home-brewed beer entered in a contest that was called “Cop Puncher”.

Quick reference to the vitals of Cow Puncher IPA, ABV is 7.9% and IBU is listed as 70+. Price is nice at $5.99 for the bomber. Lightish orange pour with a perky white head that dissipates rapidly. First sip, I get a quick blast of cracker grains, but that quickly gets overpowered by heavy citrus hops of grapefruit and orange zest. Some hop resin and a dank earthy herbal/medicinal finish. Tastes more bitter that the 70 IBU and that bitterness grows sip after sip. Definitely a one-dimensional beer. Personally, I wish there was a bit more malt or candy sweetness to balance this one out, but I understand there is a hop-centric crowd that would fall in love with this beer. Cow Puncher IPA reminds me a bit of All Day IPA (all hops). I’ll put Cow Puncher IPA at a respectable 85 points. I’ll be back to check out future offerings.
