Dogfish Head – Chicory Stout

Tasting: December 28 & 30, 2010
Style: Stout

When I think stout – I think big, bold robust. Unfortunately, I’ll call this stout underwhelming. I poured a slightly chilled bottle (45 minutes in fridge) into a half-pint pub glass. Appearance was dark with tan head that dissipated to a thin bead. I had a hard time picking up any complex nose here…just coffee. Taste – this one is very demure. I get roasted coffee and a hint of licorice and not much more in complexity. The taste does not linger on the palate. It also feels thin and watery. I left the second half of the bottle sit on my counter top for another 45 minutes in hopes that at a warmer temperature it would open up a bit more — it didn’t. I tried my second bottle straight at room temperature. it wasn’t much better.

I give it a 77.
