Epic - Elevated Series Copper Cone Pale Ale

I really enjoy this brewery. They have three lines of beer categorized as: “Classic”; “Elevated” and “Exponential”. The “Classic” series of beers are unchanging and appear to be available year round. I say unchanging because the “Elevated” and “Exponential” lines are brewed in small batches and with each successive batch — the brewers tweak the recipe. Obviously, that’s a double-edged sword. Whether you love a beer or hate it – those opinions could change with each successive batch. I’ve reviewed a couple of offerings from their “Exponential” series and loved them — but who knows — the recipes have probably since my tasting.

As noted in the title, this beer is from their “Elevated” series are the brewmaster’s take on standard styles, so you’ll find pale ale, IPA, stout and a Belgian strong ale. This one is their pale ale. The label notes that it’s 6.8% ABV and this particular bottle is from release # twelve brewed on April 19, 2011. A quick cross reference from their site notes that they are up to release # seventeen. The tweaks from the release previous include the throttling back of the zeus and columbus hops. I noticed on the “Expontential” series label that it the batch size was a little under two-thousand bottles. This one has no indication of a batch size.

As the title would indicate, it pours a cloudy copper color. A quickly dissipating head. Some subtle malt and citrus hops on the nose. The first sip is a very fizzy mouthful, real dank earthy flavor here. A nice combination of rich malt and some bitter earthy hops. Reminds me of the hops from Red’s Rocket Ale that I had last night. I called them a combination of strong black tea, pepper and grapefruit over the top of a semi-sweet malt posing as a roasted caramel/toffee. I’ll call this medium-bodied. I’m already in love with this brewery and this one doesn’t disappoint — 90 points.
