Tasting: April 14, 2013
Style: Barley Wine
Beer # 456
Epic’s “Exponential” series is a limited run beer in which the recipe is tweaked with each successive release. This is release number ten and it was brewed in November of 2012. From what I’ve read on their website, the ingredients in release ten are the same as what were used in release nine. The only noticeable difference is that the ABV is jacked up to 11.2% with this release as compared to the 10.6% of release nine.
First impressions give me brawny roasted caramel, vanilla and smooth carbonation. The alcohol is certainly present, but nicely concealed under rich mouthfeel. They use some massive hop varieties and they do leave some mild resinous hop flavor – not much in the way of bitterness. A little further in, it’s not as massive as that first sip — actually it whimpers out further into the bottle. It’s still a nice barley wine — and I can recommend it as good basic example of the style. It doesn’t distinguish itself – for me, 85 points.
