Even more fridge catch-ups including Symzonia

Catch Wave by Grimm Artisanal Ales
Tasting: August 15, 2016
Style: IPA
ABV: 6.4%
Beer #:1,005

Catch Wave an American-style IPA with an ABV of 6.4% brewed by Grimm Artisanal Ales

(C) 2016 popsonhops

They recommend rolling the can and I did. Maybe a bit too much as I have a glass full of head. Seems a bit more aggressive than some of the other offerings from Grimm. Cracker-like malt underneath some strong indiscernible bitterness. If I had to pin it down, I’d say pine. Has some nice peach undertones as well as some honey. Didn’t like it all that much at first but came to enjoy the last two-thirds of this 16 ounce can. In conclusion, Catch Wave gets 92 points.

Symzonia by Omnipollo
Tasting: August 17, 2016
Style: IPA
ABV: 13.0%
Beer #:1,006

Symzonia Imperial Stout by Omnipollo, Stockholm, Sweden

(C) 2016 popsonhops

This hefty 13% ABV stout is said to be conditioned on Ethiopian coffee, Madagascar vanilla beans, Brazilian cocoa nibs and cinnamon sticks. Right out of the gate, Symzonia is full of flavor. I get a pronounced marshmallow and some roasted bitterness. Symzonia is much too heavy on the cinnamon as it comes across like a Christmas ale. In addition, I pick up just a little coffee and only a bit of vanilla. Lots of good in this stout (marshmallow, concealed booziness) but comes up short in other areas (too much cinnamon and surprisingly thin body for a boozy bomb). Even with the flaws I’ll conclude Symzonia comes in at 90 points in my book.

Montauk Session by Montauk
Tasting: August 23, 2016
Style: Session IPA
ABV:4.9%
Beer #: 1,007

Montauk Session IPA by Montauk Brewing

(C) 2016 popsonhops

A bonus beer from a trade that centered on my receipt of two bottles of Maine’s Dinner. After that, it just doesn’t matter. Not much oomph here. Most session IPA lay the hops pretty thick. This one didn’t. 82 points.

Ripple by Kane
Tasting: August 24, 2016
Style: Session IPA
ABV: 4.4%
Beer #:1,008

Ripple by Kane Brewing Company

(C) 2016 popsonhops

I thought Ripple was an odd name because I was thinking they were referring to cheap liquor. But I quickly came to my senses and made the connection that ripple as in a small wave. Session beer, small wave – I got it. Clever. Anyway, I had intended to pick up some bottles of Overhead at the brewery after a day at the beach but to my disappointment, they had sold the last bottle about 30 minutes earlier. My consolation was a couple bottles of Ripple and a growler of Overhead. Made with all Nelson Sauvin hops (New Zealand variety), has a real bright citrus flavor. Pops of grapefruit. As with many session ales, not much sweetness or viscosity lurking below but all in all a really nice example of the style. 90 points.

17 Mint Chocolate Stout by Perennial
Tasting: September 25, 2016
Style: Stout
ABV: 10.0%
Beer #:1,009

17 Mint Chocolate Stout by Perennial Artisan Ales

(C) 2016 popsonhops

I love mint chocolate chip ice cream and this stout by Perennial Artisan Ales tastes reminds me an awful lot of one of my favorite treats. It’s creamy, filled with chocolate and the mint cuts through the body like a knife. Booziness was well concealed. I liked 92 points.

Nikolai Vorlauf by Funky Buddha
Tasting: October 1, 2016
Style: Stout
ABV: 9.5%
Beer #:1,010

Nikolai Vorlauf Imperial Russian Stout by Funky Buddha

(C) 2016 popsonhops

Strikes me as having a rum influence. Some sweetness and roasted coffee. A little thinnish in body. I’ll still put this stout at 88 points.

Other mentions:
Firestone Walker Oakfest (beer # 1,011). eh, not a good example of marzen. 80 points.
Stone Mocha IPA (beer # 1,012). Interesting combination of coffee and IPA. Reminds of their Dayman IPA. 89 points.
Golden Road Wolf Among Weeds (beer # 1,013). Might be a tad old as it was canned nearly two months ago. However, at this age, really quite drinkable. Tropical fruit, solid malt base. 88 points.
Collective Arts Ransack the Universe Hemisphere IPA (beer # 1,014). From Canada eh. 6.8% ABV made with two of my favorite hops Galaxy and Mosaic. Nicely balanced and entirely drinkable. Mellow tangerine rind, sweet tropical fruit. Nice – 88 points.
DC Brau Space Reaper (beer # 1,015). Not much to say other than the hops have gone funky bitter. Mundane, 86 points
Collective Arts Rhyme & Reason (beer # 1,016). Frankly, I liked the other offering from this Canadian brewery more than this one but they look like they are on track north of the border. 82 points.
