Tasting: May 6, 2011
Style: Double Pale Ale
Another night, another beer that promises a “hop-wallop”. Last night, Sierra Nevada’s 100 IBU Hoptimum — tonight, Double Dog’s 85 IBU Double Pale Ale. This one weighs in at a hefty 11.5% ABV. It’s Mother’s Day weekend which means tonight, just a few moments for myself to enjoy this beer and the rest of the weekend for the deserving worship of my wife.
Another sample from John — man does he love his jacked up hops. I can’t help but compare this to the Hoptimum I had last night. I get the same burnt/roasted malts that lend a quiet sweetness coupled with a very bitter hop punch. Funny, the label says that most versions of double IPA leave you a little short-changed on back end, but not so with Double Dog. Frankly, I have to disagree, this one certainly delivers a hop forward punch — but the back end is simply a wimpering dog.
I had higher expectations of a beer right in my IBU wheelhouse. I’ll say the mouthfeel is good, lots of hop resin stickiness. The label also says, “Good people drink good beer” — I’ll agree, but this good person will take his taste buds elsewhere — 83 points for me.
