Founders – Kentucky Breakfast Stout

Tasting: March 23, 2011
Style: Stout

This is the must have beer of the month. Every store that got KBS is rationing…I had a total of three bottles (two now). I’m hoping to get more on Friday. You really get an appreciation of how many fellow beer geeks are out there when you have a release that attracts this much attention. A month ago, I put my name on the list at Wine & Beverage Depot. They called me on Tuesday to tell me that they were holding a single bottle for me…really…a month’s wait for one twelve ounce bottle?

I really enjoyed Founders Breakfast Stout, so I’m certainly interested in trying this one. I’ve read some opinions that say this is just their breakfast stout aged in bourbon barrels. I’m sorry, but even if it that’s the case — the addition of the bourbon/oaky aroma and flavor take this stout to a whole other plateau.

You get the nose of this beer with little effort. I simply popped the cap and got hit with dark chocolate and bourbon. It pours and inky black with a coffee colored head that dissipates fairly quickly. Label says 70 IBU and 11.2% ABV. The flavors are what you’d expect, thick velvety mouthfeel of coffee and dark chocolate. However, the bourbon and vanilla flavors are a beautiful compliment. I can easily distinguish all of these primary characteristics, so I’ll call it a well-balanced stout. I love Peche Mortal — KBS and Peche Mortal have a lot in common — in particular the velvety mouthfeel. But I’ll still have to put this one as my favorite stout to date…97 points.
