Founders – Porter

Tasting: December 16, 2011
Style: Porter

There was a poll on Founders’ website asking readers the question —

What character from our labels would you most like to have dinner with? You be the judge…

I don’t know about you — but the porter lady wins. Red looks like an interesting character – but the wild hair would might indicate some insanity. I could see him talking about being spied on by the neighborhood dogs. Backwoods Bastard — well the axe and the lack of pupils eliminates him, besides, I’d have to pick up the tab and probably drive him back to his cabin in the middle of nowhere and who knows if I’d make it back. Double trouble two-faced man? Well, he’s be interesting just to see which mouth he’d use – but the face is a little freaky. With porter lady – how could you go wrong with a description of dark, rich and sexy?

Your thoughts on the question?

On to the beer. I’ve mentioned in other entries that I’m not really a big fan of porter. I know it’s a close relative to stout and I love stout — but it just strikes me as just watery stout. I’ve tried porters from Stone, Rogue and Epic – and each has fallen short in my book. So, onto an offering from America’s best brewery. This one is a World Beer Cup gold medal winner. Checks in at 6.5% ABV and an IBU of 45. Fizzy first sip has all the characteristics you’d look for in a porter — or even a stout. Roasted grain, chocolate and coffee notes that provide some robust bitterness. Get something akin to liquid smoke. Still fizzy and somewhat thin in the mouthfeel. Although, I get some nice stickiness in the lips about halfway through.

It’s not you porter lady — it’s me. You are beautiful and have so much to offer, but I don’t seem to get that connection with any porter. Thanks for the evening and I wish you nothing but the best. I’ll put it at 84 points.

As a side note — only one more Founders beer to complete all 14 offerings — Pale Ale. It’s available year round – but somehow I can’t find it.
