Fuller’s – London Pride

Tasting: February 11, 2011
Style: Pale Ale (English)

Craig asked John and I if we would prefer something “malty” or something “hoppy”. Although I like hoppy beers, I prefer malty. This one is a good standard English ale. It has everything you look for…little/no carbonation, malty nose and subtly bitter with a crisp dry finish. As with a lot of English pale ales I’ve had, I also get a metallic taste. I’ve always wondered if that’s the high mineral content of the water coming through. As a “former” home brewer, I recall reading that water in England (in particular the Trent River) has the highest mineral content. I like other ales better (including Fuller’s ESB). But, as mentioned in another blog posting — good English ales are scarce in the US. I guess they don’t have importers or distributors willing to bring in the variety you find in (say) Belgian Ales.

I’ll give this one an 89
