Goose Island Big John
(c)2013 popsonhops

Doesn’t everyone know a “Big John”? I know one and he and his brother are both gentle giants. Big John is the responsible one but he doesn’t have to do much to earn that title. Big John did step out of character on occasion and I still have an ancient memory of him drinking six beers through a funnel in a matter of seconds. That wasn’t the feat – it was that everyone that missed it the first time convinced him to do it a second time a short time later. That was the first time I had seen anyone do a “funnel” and probably the only time I recall seeing anything stagger Big John. I can’t help but think of him when I saw this label.

This Big John is part of the Goose Island family of stouts. I enjoyed their Night Stalker stout on tap last week so, I went scouting for bottles the very next day. In my travels, I picked up a couple bottles of this stout and was stunned to see a Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout (yippee!).

Label says that this is made with cacao nips (chocolate). Right off the bat, this one reminds me an awful lot of Bourbon County Brand Stout, minus the barrel influence. Lots of raisin, chocolate, roasted flavors and warming booziness (11.5% ABV). Has some licorice and teriyaki undertones. Sticky lips and rich mouthfeel. This is another solid stout offering. I’m not sure it’s funnel-worthy or if Big John would like this at all, but I like it 91 points.
