Great Divide – Claymore Scotch Ale

Tasting: October 25, 2011
Style: Scotch Ale (Wee Heavy)

claymore

Don’t you just love this style? I love just saying it… “I had too many wee heavies last night and my head feels a wee heavy this morning”. You can almost hear the scottish accent when you say it. Wee heavy is a strong variety of what is called a Scotch ale. Scotch ale is a malt heavy brew that gets its dark coloring from an extended boiling of grains used. Wee heavy is a richer and higher alcohol version of a Scotch ale. No surprise, American versions of wee heavy tend to have a bit more ABV that their Scottish counterparts. This one is from a bonny brewery in Colorado called Great Divide (only 4,415 miles from me home in Edinburgh). It has a remarkable 7.7 % ABV.

Pour – dark brown,
Nose – Roasted malt
Taste: Burnt wood — peat. burnt toffee.
Mouthfeel: thick and sticky
lingering roasted aftertaste.

88 points.

A really nice example of the style.
