Tasting: October 18, 2012
Style: Pale Ale
When I think fresh hop, I can’t help but think of Founder’s Harvest Ale. Every time I see a beer that claims to be fresh hops, I immediately think that this will be the beer that comes close to my fresh hop bench mark – Founders Harvest Ale. It doesn’t many sips of Great Divide Fresh Hop to realize that it isn’t even close. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice drinkable ale but there really isn’t any fresh hop flavor here. Really some diminutive breadish grains followed by mellow grassiness and a wisp of citrus. For me, it’s missing the floral and distinctive hop resin you’d find in fresh hops. Disappointed and certainly looking forward to next week’s arrival of Harvest Ale. Still a solid 84 – sigh.
