Great Divide – Hibernation Ale

Tasting: March 3, 2011
Style: Winter Ale

I bought this as part of a 12-pack variety which included Titan IPA, Scotch ale and Hibernation ale. I really love Titan and was interested in trying what they bill as an “Old English Style” ale. If you’ve read my blog entries, you know I love English ale so this one already has my expectations elevated. Pours a rich reddish brown — with a head that dissipates quickly. I get a nice smoky nose but unfortunately my first few sips reveal this funky yeasty/earthy flavor, when I zero in on it, it really tastes like overcooked green beans mixed with roasted coffee bean/chicory. Can’t say I can recall a time where I craved green beans and coffee — a terrible combination.

I give it 72 points.
