Tasting: January 8, 2015
Beer #: 684
The Scoville Scale rates the heat index of peppers. The bell pepper rates a 0 while the Carolina Reaper rates 2,200,000. The Habanero comes in somewhere between 100,000 – 350,000 range. For further reference, a jalepeno comes in at about 3,500. So, while the habenero isn’t going to melt your insides, it certainly is a formidable heat generator.
I’ve had hot pepper beer before, most notably Ed’s Cave Creek. That beer was like a Corona with a whole jalepeno floating in each bottle. It was an odd experience as my mouth was hot and the instinct was to drink something cold. Habanero Sculpin is tricky to drink. Straight to the throat guarantees a gasping, choking experience (I know). A slow swish before swallowing also scalds the palate. Actually, drinking it defensively works best – small sips, not too long on the palate and a careful swallow. Habanero Sculpin is pure novelty and is a one and done with me. It has a world class base beer in Sculpin (95 points) and the pepper when it aren’t burning actually have a nice sweet bell pepper flavor. You live and die by the heat and for the fact that I drank about 16 ounces in one sitting – I’ll put Habanero Sculpin at 83 points.
