Tasting: July 3, 2011
Style: IPA (Rye)
This is from a series called “Harpoon 100 Barrel Series”. This is listed as session number 37. Also from the label of this 22 ounce bottle – ABV is 6.9%, IBU listed as 54 and original gravity is listed as 15 (plato, I assume or 1.060). Not really numbers that inspire — but the proof is in the taste. The pour is a lightish amber with a frothy off white head. I get a sweet aroma — I’m going to describe it as hay and honey. As expected from the label vital signs — it’s a little demure, thin mouthfeel and lacking in hops for an IPA. I get a flash of the rye and some underlying sweet malt then it charges off to some hop bitterness that doesn’t really go anywhere. As I work my way through this bottle, the sticky malt becomes more evident. Overall, it’s an okay beer and I’ll just call it at 83 points.
