Hop Program – Beer III
This Black Ale is the third installment of Maine Beer Company’s Hop Program Series. Of the four released to date, Beer III is currently the only “non-IPA” offering — however, the brewery promises another a-typical Maine Beer hoppy experience. In general, I like “experimental” beers from breweries. It is interesting to see what a quality brewery can do when they travel a little off the established path of their regular offerings.
What was my experience? I found Beer II to be another very straightforward and well-crafted beer from Maine Beer Company. It has everything you’d look for in a quality black ale or even a black IPA. From the initial pour of the 16 ounce bottle, this black ale delivers a pleasant but mellow citrus aroma. The flavor is firm roasted grains (a little coffee-ish) over a lemon citrus compliment. Palate finishes with that same coffee but the bitterness subsides wonderfully. A little thin and shallow complexity but I can’t complain too much 91 points.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the image and dedication on the label “Dedicated to Blossom”. Blossom is an eastern-painted turtle who resides at the Center for Wildlife located in Maine.
