Tasting: April 22, 2013
Style: Black Ale
Beer # 458
Preparing for vacation will make me go short and sweet with this entry. Overall impression – Hoppin’ Frog Hop Heathen is a totally complex and very enjoyable dark ale. Rich with roasted malt, barley and rich molasses. It has almost a scotch flavor. Hops are assertive with pine, citrus and spicy-earthiness. Keeping with balance – this one is only moderately bitter (label says 70 IBU). So many flavors…a new one with each sip. They all meld together to make a nice ale. On the negative side – the 8.8% ABV isn’t well concealed and the carbonation is a big intrusive at first. A few swirls of the glass mellowed out both issues. I’ll put it at 91 points. Another winner from Ohio’s Hoppin’ Frog.
Also – since I bought a bottle of it today – I’ll finish by saying it reminds me a bit of Firestone Walker’s Wookey Jack.
