Hopzilla

Sean Lawson and I have a number of insignificant things in common.

We share the surname Lawson

We’re both from New Jersey

We both love beer (at least I do – I can’t speak for Sean).

My former neighbors are now his new neighbors in Warren (on same street apparently).

If I had the opportunity to meet him, I would certainly relay a quick anecdote. By complete coincidence, I really wanted to name my youngest son Sean. My wife vetoed the idea citing that every Sean she ever knew was crazy. Knowing what I know now – I think it would have been cool for a craft beer geek like me to say (or lie) that I named my son after legendary (and possibly crazy) brewing legend.

Anyway, as you know, I’ve been writing about my recent vacation in Vermont and along the way, I was able to find my way to the East Warren Community Market on the day when Lawson’s Hopzilla was going to be released. While the two women at the counter were bagging fresh green beans I scoured the refrigerator case for my prize – but my expectations diminished as I didn’t see any Lawson’s beer. I asked one of the women if they ever got any of Lawson’s bottled releases. She said to the other woman, “We still have Hopzilla don’t we?” That was one of those craft beer rushes that make the hunt worthwhile. She was kind enough to sell me (and my Sean-hating wife) a bottle each.

Not sure why there isn’t the customary trademark battle over the name Hopzilla as Terrapin Brewing makes a Hopzilla. Maybe it’s not an issue since you can’t really call what Terrapin makes beer.

Very fresh and green in flavor. Resinous and dank. Wonderfully balanced bitterness and tropical fruit syrup-like sweetness. Really nice – 95 points.
