Tree House Brewing

Julius and more…

I bounce around from beer obsession to beer obsession like a sugared up six-year old bouncing off classmates on the playground. My latest fevered hunt was for a sampling of beer from the latest buzz-worthy brewery – Tree House Brewing of Monson, Massachusetts. The brewery is a three hour drive and this sugared up six year old thought long and hard about taking the day off and making a beer run this past Wednesday. I came to my senses when I envisioned the hissy fit I would have thrown if there was not any canned beer when I arrived. Man, that would have been a rage that would top any six-year old’s efforts. Thankfully, I decided to test my trading skills instead. A few pictures posted on the Beer Trading 101 Facebook page on Sunday and this batch of Tree House beer was in hand on Tuesday.

Alter Ego

Tasting: October 10, 2015
Style: American IPA
Beer # 821
ABV: 6.8%

Talk about citrus – wow. Alter Ego may pour cloudy but the flavor comes through in high definition. Tastes just like you’ve bitten into a bittersweet orange. Amazingly juicy and that bitterness is amazingly gentle and subtly contributes to this ale. Alter Ego is well-balanced and totally loved – 97 points.

Lights On
Tasting: October 11, 2015
Style: American Pale Ale
Beer #: 822
ABV: 5.6%

Canned just four days ago, Lights On comes up pretty one-dimensional. Reminds me of a sessionable ale. Hops up front bitterness lingers but not much going on underneath. On the plus side Lights On does have a bright citrus flavor but definitely not the intensity that I found in Alter Ego. I will call Lights On at 88 points.

Julius
Tasting: October 13, 2015
Style: Imperial IPA
Beer #:823
ABV:

And now onto the main event – Julius. Everyone wants one and everyone that has had one raves about it. It’s tough to stand out in the IPA category but Julius comes up totally unique. Tons of that tropical fruit and juicy orange. Bitterness is barely detectible and subdued on the finish. It’s a juice bomb filled with smooth clean flavor. Very elegant for such a raw beer. I’ll peg Julius at 97 points.
