Just Outstanding IPA
Kern River Brewing only distributes in California. In order to get my hands on their legendary IPA – Citra (94 points) I had to craft a deal with Mike from California via beer exchange. I sent him a medley of bottles from Founders Brewing (a bottle of each: KBS, Imperial Stout, Breakfast Stout, Old Curmudgeon, Devil Dancer and Backwoods Bastard). In addition to the bottle of Citra, Mike sent me two additional bottles from Kern River – Just Outstanding IPA and Class V stout. While these were secondary add-ins each has their own critical acclaim. Just Outstanding received a score of 94 points from the Beer Advocate community while Class V received a score of 91 points from the same community. I’ll focus on Class V at a later date – for now, I’m ready to pop open Just Outstanding IPA.
Label points out that this beer is named for a California bike trail as well as just telling it like it is. At 6.8% ABV, Just Outstanding IPA is also touted as having a huge malt bill and dry-hopped for floral influences. Bursts out of the gate with tropical fruit of pineapple, fresh orange with a creamy mouthfeel. Just Outstanding IPA gets an A+ for balance meaning the bitterness and sweetness are harmonious in character. I’m really enjoying Just Outstanding IPA – It’s rare that I would align with the Beer Advocate community but I’ll peg it at 94 points. Really a nice IPA – I think I’ll be emailing Mike once again.
