Lagunitas – The Hairy Eyeball

Tasting: February 18, 2011
Style: Ale

Okay, so I don’t have any idea where hairy eyeball gets its name. Lagunitas’ website has “stories” and they have a three-part series on eyeballs and hairballs — but it makes no sense — and I have no interest in a head trip. I’ll leave it at that.

The ale pours a dark amber and has a creamy head. Carbonation is mostly still. I get roasted malt. The taste delivers expected roasted malts and subdued sweetness. It finishes with some moderate bitterness that lingers nicely. I am enjoying this one. It’s a nice contrast to the hoppy and belgian style beers I’ve been drinking of late. Despite opening up my notice of jury duty while enjoying a beer, I still give it a 90 after my first sampling.

Follow up on December 2013 – not sure if this is the same beer. I recall it being a lot like an English ale. This time around I get a lot of Belgian spice in clove and nutmeg. Not enjoying this one at all. I stick with my original impression from a couple of years ago – but the stock is declining with me. On a do over – 80 points.
