Tasting: July 11, 2011
Went to Wine & Beverage Depot to see if the July release of Devil Dancer had hit the shelves — it hadn’t. While there, I spied a bomber of this beer and had to have it. I like special releases and I especially like them when they’re from a brewery that makes good beer like Lagunitas. They seem to be a fun brewery — probably people you’d love to sit down with and have a beer. I really like what I’m reading on the label — an OG of 1.085 (high density — sweet potentially high in alcohol) with IBU of 76.92 (moderate) and 8.9% ABV . Also from the label “Beer speaks, people mumble”– how true.
The “.alt” throws me a bit. There is an old world style of beer called “altbier” that uses pale malt, but they don’t call this an altbier. Maybe the “.alt” is a reference to alternative. Regardless – I don’t know and I don’t feel it necessary to give myself a brain cramp trying to figure it out.
Pours a light orange, the bouquet is of sweet malt, grapefruit and pine. Flavors are light, but I get a wave of caramel (probably from pale/caramel malt), the hops come charging in in the form of earthy pine/grapfruit, but they are nicely anchored by that sweet malt. Mouthfeel is wonderful and sticky. I’m really liking this one…88 points.
