Lagunitas – Maximus

Tasting: May 21, 2011
Style: IPA

Second (and probably last) beer of the evening. Only 8 minutes left in the countdown to the end of the world. Kids are watching Shrek, wife is out shopping and I’m prepping to grill some bubba’s. Funny, I’m looking at the label of Maximus and in the upper left in small print is the phrase, “the end is near” — gulp — really? Well, I’ll try and squeeze this one in…

Pardon me as I go a little further off topic — whenever I drink this beer, I can’t help but think of the movie Gladiator. I find myself repeating — Maximus! Maximus! Maximus! as I walk up the stairs after grabbing one from my beer fridge. Anyway back to the subject at hand (or in hand).

From the label OG 1.080 (high), ABV 7.5% and IBU of 72.41 (a little surprising with that high of an OG). Pours bright orange, not much of a head. Whiffs of grapefruit and honey. Very strong grapefruit hops in my first couple of sips. Bitterness is right in my sweet spot. I get an undertone of sweetness of floral and malt. I have to admit, I’ve had this many times before and it has been one of favorite IPAs. I also love Hop Stoopid from Lagunitas as well. I give it a solid 89.

As I finish this beer, it’s shortly after 6:00 pm. I guess this beer was good luck — or Harold Camping is a nut job. Just to be safe, I’ll have to have another on December 21, 2012 on the day of the Mayan Prophecy.
