Locust Reign

A three day vacation had my family driving to Mystic, Connecticut. As you might expect, I pondered and plotted a beer excursion. My target destination? New England Brewing Company in Woodbridge, CT. My target beer? – Fuzzy Baby Ducks, Locust Reign and possibly Gandhi Bot. It worked out well route-wise as we decided to take the Merrit Parkway instead of the traffic-ridden Interstate 95. The brewery is located just a few hundred yards from the highway. We pulled into the parking lot just before noon. At the open warehouse door my first sight was of an incredibly tall skid of empty cans of Gandhi Bot. It was beautiful. A guy on a forklift greeted me only to inform me that they were closed and that the tap room wouldn’t open for another four hours. He must have noticed the wind immediately falling out of my sails. I told him that I had just driven two hours for a stop at their brewery. He must have pitied me as he invited me for a quick growler fill. He offered me a choice of four beers – but all I had to hear was Locust Reign as a choice (no Fuzzy Baby Ducks or Gandhi Bot) and back on the road I went with 64 ounces of double IPA.

Locust Reign boasts an 8.5 % alcohol by volume. Pour is a murky and rich orange color. Very chewy and rich in flavor. Massive grapefruit, robust tangerine, earthy-grassy, black tea and black pepper. All this hop complexity is offset just enough with a solid toasted caramel malt base. Totally enjoyed Locust Reign. If they hadn’t kicked the keg in just a day – I would have made a stop on the return trip for another growler. Locust Reign gets a very nice 95 from me.
