Lost Nation Mosaic IPA

Did you know that today was national beer day? Yeah, neither did I. It didn’t dawn on me until I saw the litany of #nationalbeerday across my social media. The “holiday” dates way back to 2009 when Justin Smith (only known to his family and friends at the time) started a Facebook page. The mention was ultimately parlayed into a badge on the popular beer app, Untappd.

Actually, national beer day predates the hashtag as it coincides with the date of the signing of the Cullen-Harrison Act. At the conclusion of prohibition, Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed legislation that allowed beer with an alcohol by weight of up to 3.2% to be sold. After which Roosevelt said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” People lined up for beer (probably a lot like the lines today) and had their first “legal” beer in quite some time.

For the geeks like me, alcohol by weight (ABW) converts to the familiar alcohol by volume (ABV) by mulitplying by 1.25. That 3.2% ABW would be 4% ABV. Today, I have an IPA that checks in at 5.5% and beer like Goose Island Bourbon County Stout exceed 15%. Thank goodness for progress.

Lost Nation Mosaic IPA comes my way from a friend’s visit to Vermont. Mosaic is a type of hop primarily used for aroma and its aroma descriptors include blueberry, tangerine, papaya, rose, blossoms, grass and bubble gum. I get the tangerine and papaya. Flavor is mellow with the same fruit combination. The story here is the crisp and pithy flavor. Mellow bitterness and smooth drinkability. I’d say 91 points.

In conclusion, National IPA Day is the first Thursday in August. That’s August 3rd this year and you can #ipaday along. August 3rd is coincidentally “grab some nuts day” – I’ll leave that there for you.
