Tasting: December 9, 2012
The name raises curiosity – Lunch? Does it mean that it’s low enough in ABV that you can have one at lunch and won’t come back to the office and accidentally staple your arm to the desk? Actually, the explanation behind the name is right on the label. “Lunch” is the name of a whale that has been spotted in the Gulf of Maine for the past thirty years. It garnered the name Lunch because of the huge chunk taken out of its dorsal fin – although it looks like a shark aimed to make Lunch its lunch, the truth is the injury was caused by a propeller. I read elsewhere that Lunch had a calf named “T-Time” for the T-shaped scar on it’s side. Lunch the beer is named as a tribute to Lunch the whale and urges her to “keep swimming”.
This one is 7% ABV – so, you might end up stapling your arm if you had one at lunch. I urge everyone to enjoy one in the comfort of your own home. This one has a born on date of 11-18-12, so it’s very fresh. It’s billed as an east coast version of a west coast IPA. It pours a cloudy amber with a persistent white head. First impression is wow. This is wonderfully complex. It has an excellent progression. You get a blast of sweet fruit like tangerines, pineapples followed by bread-like grains, followed by grassy, pepper/spice and a building bitterness. This progression can repeat sip after sip. Mouthfeel is medium and a tad fizzy. This one is quite enjoyable. I’ll put this at 94 points.
I’ll also make this recommendation. Maine Beer is truly a small brewer. If you see this beer — pick it up, you may never know if they can produce this one consistently. I hope they can. I’m really taking a liking to this brewery and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
