Maine Beer Zoe

Maine Beer Company Zoe
(c)2012 popsonhops

Another beer from the beer capital of Maine – Portland. It’s a simple unassuming label with a simple smiling face and the name Zoe. According to the label, Zoe is named for an owner’s daughter and the smile reference relates to a father’s memory of his daughter’s joyous smile while visiting a Whale Museum in Bar Harbor. What dad couldn’t relate? I love it.

The unusual name got me thinking — I don’t know anyone named Zoe. After looking it up – I’ll guess that I’m not alone. Out of the more than 300,000,000 people in the United States there are only 7,350 women named Zoe. That’s a minuscule .0006% of the population. Let’s compare that to my name — Michael. There are more than 3,200,000 men or 2.6% of the male population named Michael. Okay, how about something like unusual — say — Abraham. Wouldn’t you know it, there are more than 42,000 Abrahams in the US — 6 times the amount of Zoes. But, I don’t know anyone named Abraham either. Anyway enough of my babbling – let’s get on with some beer here.

Maine Beer Zoe has a thick creamy head that sits atop a rich dark brown base – really looks like an ice cream float. Sweet and earthy aroma. Right off the bat the thing I like most about this ale is a plush mouthfeel, really creamy. The hops and sweetness don’t hit you at first but I’ll liken it to eating Buffalo wings. The heat builds wing after wing and in this case the earthy pepper, woody and black tea hop flavor part in favor of a growing bitterness. Thankfully the bitterness doesn’t crush the flavor and the balance of those dank hops and sweet malt are a beautiful melody. I didn’t know what to expect from the looks of the homemade label – but I like it a lot — definitely made me smile. Easy 92 points.
