Mikkeller – Beer Hop Breakfast

Tasting: February 5, 2012
Style: Stout (Oatmeal)

I heard a very surprising stat about beer consumption and Super Bowl Sunday. A local news radio station reported that the United States will consume 50 million cases of beer on that day – that’s 1.2 billion beers. The population of the United States is about 300 million people – of which about 210 million are over the age of eighteen. That’s a staggering six beers for every adult – wow. I’m not so sure I believe it. I dragged the average down because I only had two. I’m thinking a few people I know were able to pick up my slack – right John, Mark and Craig?

My first half beer was Big Eye from Ballast Point (88 points), I had this one from Danish brewer – Mikkeller as I settled in to watch the second half of the game. I didn’t have a chance to write my notes while the game was on – so here I am. I am a Cowboy’s fan, so it pains me a bit to see any Giant success – but I was happy for one person – my dad — he’s a big Giants’ fan and they won the game on his 84th birthday.

I picked this one up while buying a few bombers of Mikkeller’s limited release — Beer Geek Brunch Weasel (96 points). This one is a 7.5 % ABV oatmeal stout brewed with coffee. Has a very interesting nose. You’d expect coffee and some chocolate — but this one has massive hops mixed with roasted grains. Combined it smells like an ash tray. That odd combination followed in my first couple of sips until the roasted malts ultimately won out. A little thin in the mouthfeel. Filled with oak and earthy qualities — some subtle coffee. Not really that remarkable — 83 points.
