Tasting: April 22, 2011
I had the pleasure of being selected for jury duty a couple of weeks ago. Lucky for me, we were dismissed before lunch. I decided to stop at the Liquor Depot in Boonton on my way home. I knew they carried Mikkeller and I was hoping to find some remaining “1000”. Supposedly, “1000” means 1,000 IBU. No luck, but curious to try some Mikkeller, I picked up a bottle of Mikkeller’s Brunch Weasel and a bottle of Stateside IPA. Both were a bit pricy at $15/bomber (pricey for beer that is).
Interesting that a brewery in Denmark wants to take a stab at the big US IPA. This one pours brownish red with a creamy head. Only 7 % ABV and Nose of orange and caramel. My first sip is rapid fire flavor — flashes of that caramel, pepper and surprisingly subtle hops that ramp up to a lingering bitter sensation moments after you swallow it. Even at that, it’s unpleasantly bitter. You know me I like malty/molasses and that sticky piney hop resin in my beers. And all the qualities I would look for are there, It’s a bit disjointed to me. I give it 83 points.
