Tasting: March 15, 2011
Okay, at $15/4 pack, I’ve been walking past this IPA for a few months now. But, since the inventory is drying up, I figured I’d bite the bullet and buy some before it completely disappears. But really for this price and everything else that’s out there, I’d better be impressed.
Pours an opaque orange with a thin creamy head. I get syrupy peaches and pineapples on the nose. My first sip gives me a very thick mouthfeel. At 10% ABV, I guess the same rule applies in beer as it does in wine. The higher the alcohol — more viscous the drink The flavors fly by very quickly, sticky toffee, some bitterness, but ends with a high-octane alcohol finish that doesn’t mix well with the lingering bitter finish. I really wish the wisp of maltiness was a lot stronger and would stick around a little longer.
Frankly, I love Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale a whole lot more than Gubna. I’d give it 84 points if it were at a reasonable price — but at this price — I’ll knock it down to 82.
