Overrated IPA

With tongue firmly inserted in cheek, Surly offers their own self-deprecating commentary on their own Overrated IPA. The label says that they are always looking to take the easy way out and notes that it is easier to brew a hoppy beer than it is to create a balanced beer. They even go on to call themselves a “one-trick” pony. However, Surly turns the tables on their critics to say that if you don’t like their beer – tough.

The other night, I enjoyed Surly’s Furious – see my thoughts Surly Furious (90 points) . I mentioned that I had become accustomed to the brawny west coast (and east coast) style of IPA. My tastebuds had forgotten the world of what I guess I’ll call “mid-country IPA”. I certainly wouldn’t call Furious one-dimensional and I’m hoping that Overrated IPA has some dimension.

Doesn’t take long to find out that this really one-dimensional. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice. The hops are pleasant citrus. Not much else. A respectable 88 points.
