Is This the Real Life?
The recent NYC Health Department’s temporary closure of Singlecut Beersmiths for a vermin problem raised only a few eyebrows. If you store grains, you get mice or rats. Frankly, everyone gets mice. We get a few in our basement when the weather gets cold but Rosie, our resident hunter, takes care of them quickly. Rushing Duck Brewing in Chester, NY has a cat named James and they post James’ killing efficiency. Singlecut reopened a couple days later. I assume with holes patched and the addition of a brewery cat.
When I was about 11 years old, my father pulled into our driveway with the flatbed of his pick-up truck loaded with boxes of candy bars. He explained that they were from my Uncle Sonny. I didn’t really know Uncle Sonny but it was an incredible summer. Years later, I asked my father about Uncle Sonny. I finally came to wonder how he came into such fortune. My father replied, “They said the candy had rat hair in it but I didn’t believe so, Sonny gave them to me.” I wish I didn’t ask.
Anyway, this bottle of Is This the Real Life? was probably brewed during the alleged vermin era but I assume the boil would have eviscerated any rat influenced remnants. At least, keep me blissfully unaware.
I love this brewery. Winning IPA after winning IPA. As usual, the name has some musical connection. I’ll save you the trouble of figuring it out. These are the first lyrics in Queen’s legendary Bohemian Rhapsody.
mmm, peach. Seems like another winner. Well-balanced with tropical sweetness and lemon grass hops. Subtle grapefruit and a chunky bitter lingering finish. In conclusion, I’ll put Is This the Real Life? at 92 points. Cheers.
