River Horse – Summer Blonde

Tasting: July 9, 2011
Style: Ale (Summer)

I’d call today the typical summer day. It’s about 92 degrees, sunny and I’m working outside. I have worked up a sufficient sweat and a sufficient thirst. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had about a gallon of water today — but it’s the ultimate day to test out a summer beer. The goal of our most recent “Pop-Swap” was to find the perfect beer for such a day. This was one of my offerings, but it truly was a blind offering. I know nothing about this beer other than the label calling it an ale and offers up that it’s 4.5% ABV. Worth noting – they’ve done a nice job with the packaging. Their hippo is done up for summer in the lipstick and bathing suit — good sense of humor.

Pours a light yellow — very loud and fizzy head. A couple of whiffs and I get grains and some fruit (like banana). My first couple of sips are bready and crisp. Not much in the way of hops, but after a few more sips, not much in the flavor department either. I get like a very weak citrus. I’ll have to head back to the fridge for something else. I like the first 3 ounces of this and it went downhill from there. I’m not a fan — I’ll call the total experience a 76.
