Roll Call EC3

Another serendipitous journey courtesy of a beer label. This time to find out where this brewery and Bronx neighborhood take its name. I found a terrific site New York City Parks Historical Markers that offers an explanation.

I’ll save you the trouble of finding the marker dedicated to Gun Hill Meadow.

Gun Hill Meadow is named for a January 25, 1777 Revolutionary War battle that took place near this site. Gun Hill Road, then known as Kingsbridge Road, was an important east-west thoroughfare, which the British and the Americans fought fiercely to control. During the battle, the British were chasing the Patriots east towards the river. While in retreat, a group of soldiers, led by Captain Bryant of the artillery, dragged a cannon atop a nearby hill and fired upon the charging Brits. That strategic position, which then became known as “Gun Hill,” forced the Brits to retreat west to Kingsbridge, allowing the Patriots to escape.

Originally, a Native American trail ran along the path of Gun Hill Road, which is just south of the meadow. It was known as Kingsbridge Road by early settlers because it led to the King’s Bridge and the Kingsbridge settlement. The route was a vital path for the Patriots because it was one of the only crossings to Manhattan at the time. It became known as Gun Hill Road around 1875 to commemorate Captain Bryant’s exploits. The actual Gun Hill is located in what is now Woodlawn Cemetery.

The New York/New Jersey area is rich with Revolutionary War history and its fascinating to discover. I love the connection this brewery has made with that history. Slogans like “join the revolution” and “make a declaration.” Well done.

EC3 (East Coast IPA) by Gun Hill Brewing Company, Bronx, NY

(C) 2016 popsonhops

EC stands for East Coast and this can is the third in a series. EC1 mentioned as a Vermont-style IPA. Sorry I couldn’t give you more details. Very few opinions on line about this beer but wow, what an aroma. Mosaic hop for sure and I’ll suspect some New Zealand hops. The flavor in Roll Call EC3 flavor follows that aroma with massive raw orange rind with surprisingly enough sweet base to keep it from absolutely crushing your tastebuds. Strong IBU. I’d guess 90 plus. I only bought a single. Now I need to go back and buy a few more of these. In conclusion, 94 points.

On a side note, I recall another brewery with New York historical connection and thought you’d like to check it out:
