Russian River – Blind Pig

Tasting: June 1, 2011
Style: IPA

God bless EBAY! I got single 500 ml bottle of Blind Pig and two 500 ml bottles of Pliny the Elder for $56 with shipping. Pretty pricey for just three bottles of beer, but I rationalized to myself that if I saw either beer at my local store for around $17 (plus the tax) I would probably buy them. From what I’ve read on Russian River’s website, Blind Pig is a legacy beer originally brewed by Vinnie Cilurzo back when the brewery was owned by Korbel. They continue to produce 3 beers year-round — Pliney the Elder, Blind Pig and Damnation. This review will complete my trifecta of Russian River’s regular offerings (Pliney 97 points, Damnation 85 points).

This IPA is only 6.0% ABV and has an IBU rating of 70. The pour is a light orange with a thin and a head that dissipates quickly. I get a really nice hoppy nose — sweet like an orange and slightly malty. The hop character amazing — pine, orange rind, over a roasted malt backbone. I’ll call it elegant. I’ll call it Pliny Jr. and I’ll call it 93 points.
