Style: Porter
Beer #: 771
ABV: 6.4%

Quick stop to Stoudts on the way home from Lancaster. Ho-hum selection in their refrigerated case. Had to grab something or the wife would call it a wasted diversion. I selected this cork and cage bomber-sized bottle. After all, shouldn’t this type of presentation be reserved for high quality beer?

I assumed that since it had rye in the name that it had some barrel aging or maybe it a strong alcohol by volume (ABV). The label didn’t indicate either and I had to ask about the ABV. I was disappointed to learn that it was only 6.4% – I think the clerk was taken aback when she heard me groan in disappointment. Why does this ABV disappoint? a higher ABV (8 %+) typically means that there were large amounts of fermentable sugars used and typically there will be residual viscosity and bigger flavor. To my tastes, lower ABV beer tend to be watery and I get a diluted flavor.

No surprise here – watery. Behind the watery film is some chocolate, roasted flavor. The cork and cage presentation and the $12 price tag should be reserved for world class beer. With all the other beer choices – this just doesn’t cut it 80 points.
