Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout

Tasting: January 2, 2011
Style: Oatmeal Stout

At one time, I considered this my favorite stout. I guess after a string of stout tastings over the last couple of days — the king has been overthrown. This tasting got off on the wrong foot as my 4-year old spilled about 1/4 of my 550ml bottle a minute after I poured it into a pint pub glass. Pours a dense black — although it reflects blood red as the light shines through the glass. The head is light brown and is maintained as a thin layer top to bottom. I get mellow roasted aromas and my first few sips reveal coffee, sweet malt, a hint of the oatmeal and a nice bitter finish. However, a few more sips the coffee and sweet malt retreat and the mouthfeel is thin. Overall, it’s still a nicely balanced stout.

I give it 87 points.
