Sierra Nevada – Beer Camp # 37 Weizenbach

Tasting: July 10, 2011
Style: Wheat

This is my last of the summer camp tastings — a wheat beer — albeit a Bavarian Hefeweizen style beer. You know how I feel about wheat beers — think cardboard or bran cereal. Although this bavarian style should be yeast heavy — offering fruit of the yeast balancing out the mellow wheat malt. I’m guessing this will be my least favorite of the trips to beer camp, but I’m going in with an open mind. Label tells me 6.8% ABV.

The color is a cloudy burnt orange I didn’t get much of a head, but I was pouring carefully enough to avoid the yeast colony at the bottom of the bottle – a trademark. Lots of banana and bread flavors going on here – very strong. Actually some very subtle spice (like clove) tucked in the background. Crisp finish and somewhat fizzy mouthfeel. This one would certainly refresh on a hot summer day. I like this one more than I thought — 86 points.
