Pumpkin beers = Holiday Ales. In many cases, they can share some of the same spice combinations: clove; cinnamon; ginger and nutmeg. Like pumpkin ales, I’ll buy a couple each year in hopes of discovering a couple that I can enjoy and might even recommend. This past October yielded a couple nice pumpkin discoveries in Rumpkin by Avery Brewing (91 points) and Heirloom Pumpkin by Almanac Brewing (90 Points) so, I’m optimistic.

Ninkasi isn’t available in New Jersey as of yet so, I bought this bottle of Sleigh’r to go along with a squealer fill of their Tricerahops (88 points) from New York.

Sleigh’r is described as an Dark Double Alt Bier. From my glossary: Alt Bier is a German-style beer originally brewed in Dusseldorf. It translates to “old beer”. It is brewed with Ale yeast but everything else in the process resembles how they brew lager. It is fermented in cool temperature wort and is additionally aged in cool temperatures for a month or two. It is said to bring out a mellow maltiness of the brew and accentuate the hop aroma.

The pour on Sleigh’r is a lighter brown. I get a yeasty clove and banana up front and a smokey char and mild coffee settling in mid palate. Finish is dry and crisp and there’s a lingering hop bitterness that comes on strong. It tastes as if I’ve mixed a porter with an IPA. It doesn’t really work for me. Sleigh’r comes in at 83 points.
